Notion Ink Adam rooted with Google apps

Roebeet from a Notion Ink Hacks forum has compiled an update.zip file that enables root access for applications and installs Google apps.

This is just an offshoot to Rothnic’s excellent work:

This is essentially the Gapps /root work that Rothnic has already done, with a few extras:

adhoc added

Transparency on the status bar added (taken from here, thanks GTO777!)

Frame buffer bump from 50 to 60. Should improve the screen slightly, and bump up performance slightly.

Titanium Backup friendly Busybox

Removed the Chinese and Froyo keyboards, adds the Gingerbread keyboard

SuperUser, YouTube apps added

A Home Switcher and Live Wallpapers added. That’s in case you prefer a different launcher.

Notion Ink demonstrates video playback via HDMI, using Adam as a big digitizer/touchpad and connectors on both sides. As you may have seen in earlier videos, you can also connect flash drives, wireless mouse and keyboards.

Videos showing Panels and Launcher, which allows to jump to and rearrange panels. The virtual keyboard have arrow keys.

Notion Ink is going to post one video per day for each application or principle that comes with Adam.

Good use of swipe gestures for navigation in the UI. “Forgotten attachment” feature.

Notion Ink Adam pricing and updates

Four versions of the Adam tablet will be launched, featuring a PixelQi/LCD screen and WiFi/WiFi+3G. All versions will have b/g/n WiFi and true GPS. The expected price range is $399-$498.

Notion Ink plans to submit the Adam to the FCC in November or early December, and hopefully they will launch the tablet at the end of this year. Custom UI, “next generation” email system and content store are also in development.

Notion Ink Adam coming in Q3 2010

According to Rohan Shravan, Notion Ink will soon be ready to produce 100,000 units every month. The company confirmed that they’re still on a track for a third quarter, 2010 launch.

SlashGear got some more details about Adam tablet. Two versions are considered for release, 12.9mm and 11.6mm, the thinner version probably will feature LCD panel instead of Pixel Qi.

nVidia estimates that tablets with LCD displays (consuming ~2W) using Tegra 2 will last for around 16 hours of full HD video. Since Pixel Qi uses just 0.2W in its electrophoretic reflective mode, potentially you can get up to 160 hours of use.

Notion Ink is planning to launch Adam with digital magazines, ebooks and comics. It will support Flash, which is huge advantage over Apple iPad. More information will be available at Mobile World Congress 2010 next week.

The company also will be running an Apps Competition, similar to Google’s ADC. No more details at this time, except over $1m prize fund.
